I love sweet potatoes.  And my MOM says that sweet potatoes are great for me, because they contains tons of good stuff like iron, vitamin C, and vitamin A.  So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they are good for doggos, too.

Why Sweet Potatoes Are Good for Dogs

Remember all that good stuff I talked about?  Well, add to that, sweet potatoes are an excellent source of fiber, which helps my tummy and digestive system do its job.  And eating fiber on a regular basis lowers the risk of other yucky things like heart disease and cancers.

Plus, sweet potatoes are whole foods, which means that they are less likely to cause problems.  Whole foods = good for both dogs, cats, and humans alike.  This makes sweet potatoes a popular carbohydrate in dog food.

Sweet potatoes are low in fat, and rich in vitamins: A, B6, C, calcium, potassium, and iron.

But be careful if your animal is diabetic: potassium is bad for diabetics due to its high glycemic index.

How Much Sweet Potato Can My Doggy Eat?

With any food, moderation is key.  Too much can cause other issues, due to the excessive vitamin A, such as bone and muscle weakness.  Also, carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes, should not be your dog’s main source of nutrition.  Dogs need animal protein as a daily part of their diet.  Be sure to talk to your veterinarian beforehand.  Try introducing, and then increasing, amount of sweet potatoes in your dog’s diet gradually.

So What About Sweet Potatoes’ Skin?

The skin of vegetables and fruits are a great source of added nutrients, so don’t discard those skins!  Instead, make them into a healthy treat.  You need to be cautious since sweet potatoes skins to dogs can make the skins get stuck on the roof of the dog’s mouth if your dog is small or young.

Precautions

  • Make sure to clean the skin and sweet potato properly to get rid of yucky pesticides.  Some doggies are smaller than you humans, so pesticides are double bad for us.
  • Avoid bad stuff like butter and spices.  Sweet potatoes are yummy enough without added stuff!
  • Sweet potatoes, especially sweet potato skins, can contain lots of calories due to the carbohydrates.  Please take that into account when feeding us.
